In the treaty of Paris the U.S got the acquisition of two Spanish islands Puerto Rico and Guam. They wanted these two territories not only to expand American territory but they also wanted to have a port between south America and North America and one between north America and Asia. They gave Puerto Ricans limited government and citizenship.
